Naxos | Though Anton Bruckner is now regarded as one of the great symphonic composers of the 19th century, he was plagued throughout his life with doubt as to his own capabilities. It was a doubt fuelled by the adverse comments of critics, and by musical friends who thought that they could help by changing the content of his works. He was to write nine numbered symphonies, the ninth remaining unfinished at the time of his death in 1896. To that cycle we now add the early 'Study Symphony' and the second of three versions of the finale for Symphony No. 4. Though he was already 39 by the time he composed the F minor symphony, he looked upon it as a student work. In reality it is a well-shaped score with carries the typical Brucknerian hallmarks. Sadly he was never to hear the work performed. |
