Naxos | Though Marc-Antoine Charpentier became a very influential French composer of the 17th century, little is known of his early life. His historical record begins at the time of his appointment as Head of Music to the house of the Duchess of Guise, a pious noblewoman who boasted a large private musical establishment. It was an appointment he retained until his death, and it was for the Duchess that he composed the bulk of his early secular works. In later life he combined this with work in sacred establishments, including the post of Head of Music at Sainte-Chapelle. It was this influential rank that placed him among the important church composers of his era. He brought a theatrical intensity to his sacred scores, revealing the dramatic aspects of religion. |
