There were 193 steps to street level from his room in the church tower, a good enough reason for the young Bohuslav Martinu to spend his evenings practising the violin. It was as a violinist that he became a member of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, though composition was the objective of his life. Many of his early scores were derivative, but he was to develop an intensely personal style, his large catalogue of music covering every genre from opera to simple instrumental scores. His works for cello and piano come from the latter part of his life, and form an important ingredient of the 20th century cello repertoire.
