Naxos | Much of the life of the Spanish musician, Antonio Soler, was spent in the religious community of the Jeronymite monks at Escorial. He elevated their musical attainments to a level that attracted the Royal family to spend each autumn there, bringing with them their own musical entourage. Though much of Soler's music was intended for the church, including Masses, Requiems and Magnificats, he is now mainly remembered for his 150 keyboard sonatas. They were fashioned on the sonatas of his mentor, Scarlatti, Soler adding a dramatic style that explored the full range of the harpsichord. Often technically demanding, they have become an essential part of the18th century repertoire. |
