Naxos | Early in his career the Polish composer, Krzysztof Penderecki, established a reputation as one of the most radical composers of the 20th century, his scores securing a place among the avant-garde modernists. In the mid-1960's he surprised the musical world by returning to a more traditional and populist style of composing. This change generated an interest in music of previous generations, including the basic structures of the symphonic format. The result was the First Symphony completed in 1973. It was to be a transitional score, his previous experimental characteristics used to generate a new spectrum of fascinating sonorities. The Fifth Symphony, dating from 1992, marks his complete return to melodic invention, the remarkable range of tonal colours and strong rhythms creating one of the composer's most interesting scores. |
