| Naxos | Throughout his long life Federico Mompou never overcame an introverted personality, his only public appearances as a pianist taking place before friends or in small recital rooms. Born in Barcelona in 1893, he was a pianist of phenomenal technique, though throughout his life he preferred working as a composer. His piano works reflect his personality, being essentially quiet, of delicate quality, and making few demands on the virtuosity of the performer. Though many of his scores are extensive, they are built from a series of miniatures, the Variaciones sobre un tema di Chopin being created from twelve short movements composed over twenty years. Mompou was only 18 when he began work on his first major piano score, Impresiones intimas, the four movements covering fifty years of his career. |
