| Naxos | Composed between 1717-23 at Cöthen in Germany, this period of Bach's musical career was a particularly happy one. He enjoyed the generous financial support of Prince Leopold, himself a musician of some ability, and he now had time available to gather revise music composed over a period of years, the Brandenburg Concertos being the most notable example. The Prince's interest in the violin may well have persuaded Bach to make 'fair copies' of his unaccompanied works for the instrument, and to group together the Sonatas for violin and harpsichord composed over a number of years. They marked a major change in chamber music, the accompaniment, which had always served as little more than a continuo line, now being required to make a significant addition to the music. Each of the Sonatas is in a different key, the format of each being much the same, with a quick movement used to bring the work to a close.
