Finding his chosen career as a schoolteacher uninteresting, Franz Schubert opted for the life of a musician, though it brought him little financial reward. A highly prolific composer, whose music now forms part of the popular orchestral and chamber music repertoire, he was to see only a few scores published before an early death.

In 1823 Schubert set to music the words of Wilhelm Moller, which relate the life of the miller. As the water continues to flow by the mill wheel, he tells the story of solitary longings, jealousies, fears and hopes. There is daydreaming, love and unhappiness in the songs, but above all there is the wealth of the composer's most attractive melodies.
