Naxos | The word 'Intermezzo' was first used in the 18th century, when comic songs were introduced between acts of serious operas to entertain the audience. It was later to describe purely orchestral passages in opera that were used to heighten a mood, usually one of drama or tragedy. The intermezzo was also expanded to provide a more extensive section of the opera, in the form of a ballet sequence. The fourteen composers included on this disc have one thing in common - they wrote the most famous Intermezzos in the world of classical music. |
