Naxos | Born in Italy at the end of the 18th century, Gaetano Donizetti became the most prolific opera composer of his day, writing sixty-five works before his death fifty-one years later. His music so dominated the theatre during his later life that one in every four operas performed in Italy was by Donizetti. After his first major international success in 1830, with the dramatic Anna Bolena, he tried to restrict himself to serious opera, though his three greatest comedies, L'Elisir d'amore, La Fille du Regiment and Don Pasquale were yet to come. The story of the 'quack' doctor selling love potions that are only bottles of wine, coupled with such famous arias as Una furtiva lagrima, have made L'Elisir d'amore one of the favourite works in popular operatic repertoire. |
