Born into a family whose musical traditions extended back five generations, Giacomo Puccini was receiving an education in church music, when, for the first time, he saw a production of Verdi's Aida. It was to change his life, and, having moved to Milan, studied opera composition with Ponchielli. Success took many years to achieve, and he was thirty-five before Manon Lescaut brought him public acclaim. There followed five of the most popular operas ever composed, including La Bohéme, Tosca and Madama Butterfly. With the Manon story already used by Massenet, Puccini required his librettists to produce a new slant on the story. Here the young Manon is 'rescued' from a life in the nunnery by Des Grieux, only to become a woman of less than immaculate morals, her trial resulting in deportation and death in North America.
