Naxos | Born in Venice and musically educated in St. Mark’s Cathedral, Antonio Caldara became the most prolific Italian opera composer of the early 18th century. The Stabat Mater is a major score of the period, and in style and content stands comparison with his contemporary, Johann Sebastian Bach. It is in nine sections, and divided between the four soloists, choir, orchestra, and organ continuo. Missa Dolorosa, composed on a smaller scale, is characterised by its use of harmonies that were particularly adventurous for that era. Caldara wrote very little for orchestra, the Sinfonias, included on this disc, having been originally composed as the introduction to oratorios. |
