Naxos | The greatest of Romanian musicians, Georges Enescu was equally remarkable as a violinist and as a composer. He contributed significantly to the development of music in his own country, although much of his activity centered on Paris where he had been a pupil of Marsick, Faure and Massenet. The two quartets are a mature synthesis of sophisticated chromaticism and thematic transformations with Romanian folk influences. Both works are performed by the Ad Libitum Quartet, winners of the Premier Grand Prix at the 1997 Évian String Quartet Competition. |
