Fauré and Ravel, mentor and pupil, were to have a major effect on the life of each other. It was the continued rejection of Ravel's attempts to win the prestigious Prix de Rome that caused a student revolt at the Paris Conservatoire, a move supported by his teacher, Gabriel Fauré. The old hierarchy resigned, leaving this mild and quiet man, as Director of the Conservatoire.
He was to bring about sweeping changes that were to enhance French musical life. Twenty years after the young Ravel composed his vivacious String Quartet, Fauré was to pay tribute to his student with the String Quartet that proved to be his last work.
