Franz Joseph Haydn was among the most important Austrian composers during the second half of the eighteenth century. His early career had not been particularly impressive, but from 1761 there began a series of works that remain at the centre of today's standard repertoire. During the early part of this period Haydn experimented with a combination of the symphony and concerto.

The Thirteenth symphony is an example of this fusion, the second and third movements being in the form of concerto for the cello and flute. It is also a feature continued in the Thirty-sixth symphony, written at much the same time. Late in his life he returned to this format, but in a more elaborate version that calls for four soloists, the score now known as the Sinfonia Concertante.
