Naxos | Largely ignored as a composer in his lifetime, Franz Berwald is now regarded as one of the major Scandinavian composers of the 18th century. In his younger years he earned a living as a violinist, but had a total career change in his later life, becoming the manager and part owner of a glass works. He composed a significant catalogue of works, including operas, sacred and secular choral scores, symphonic and chamber music. Piano Trios particularly interested him in later life, the earliest score dating from 1845, with four further trios completed between1849 and 1859. They all show a strong Germanic influence, their robust melodic style and character being the forerunner of the chamber music of Brahms. |
