James Paisible was born in France in the second half of the 17th century, the place and date unknown. He was a flute player who probably went to England to fill a vacant post in the Royal orchestra. We know that he played before the King on the royal birthday in 1677, and though he was not listed as a member of the King's Musik, until 1685, that may have been expedient in the political climate that existed between England and France. He was a composer of some standing, and wrote a quantity of chamber and instrumental music. The Six Setts of Aires was published in London in 1720, and was scored for two flutes with continuo. In the style of the French suites of the day, each has a stately prelude followed by a group of dances. They have a pleasing melodic content, and there is a high degree of joy in the music. The scores demand virtuosity and were most probably written to show Paisible's brilliance as a performer.
