Naxos | At the age of twenty-one Morton Gould was engaged to conduct and arrange a series of light music programmes for radio. It was such an outstanding success, that he was soon in demand for cinema and theatre work. Equally happy when employed in light or symphonic format, much of Gould's music uses American musical or visual themes. American Salute, based on the melody When Johnny Comes Marching Home, brought him world-wide popularity, and became the most frequently performed American symphonic work of the 20th century. Even in his 'serious' vein, Gould's music is full of easy-listening melody, his orchestral colours vivid and atmospheric. The music on this disc is typical of his output, each work drawing on traditional themes, including the orchestration of Stephen Foster's songs that had already formed part of the American folk legend. |
