Naxos | Though born in America, Howard Hanson held fast to his Scandinavian ancestry, citing Sibelius and Grieg as the two most significant influences on his compositions. It was as a teacher and conductor that international recognition came to Hanson, having held the position of Director at the Eastman Rochester School of Music for forty years. During that time he took the school to a place of world pre-eminence in the field of education and performing excellence. As a composer his style remained in the mainstream of the late Romantics, melodic inventiveness being the basis for all of his works. In his piano writing we also find the influence of Rachmaninov, much of the music calling for a virtuoso pianist. Apart from the scores written as academic exercises for student use, this disc contains all of the composer's important works for piano |
