Naxos | The American Classics series on Naxos continues with a programme devoted to one of the key figures in late-19th century American music, Edward Macdowell. Macdowell's two piano concertos are works of immense charm and immediate melodic appeal. Full of romantic bravura, they demand much of the pianist, being reminiscent of Saint-Saens, or even Liszt. The remaining pieces are equally beguiling, combining passages of scintillating vigour with moments of blissful melody. Superbly crafted performances by pianist Stephen Prutsman in the concertos and by cellist Aisling Drury-Byrne in the gorgeous Romance for cello and orchestra, supported with customary excellence and musicianship by the NSOI under Arthur Fagan. |
