Naxos | Born in Austria in 1878, Franz Schreker was 30 before the dramatic ballet score, Der Geburtstag der Infantin, brought him success as a composer. Following the critical acclaim for the opera, Der Ferne Klang, he was offered a teaching post at the Vienna Music Academy in 1912, eight years later taking a similar position in Berlin. Though it was the rise of the Nazi party that led to his dismissal in 1933, the late-Romantic style that he still employed had become educationally unfashionable. The colourful and exotic tonal colours of Der Ferne Klang relate the story of a young man, who, after years of unhappiness, realises on his deathbed that he should have forgiven the girl who turned to prostitution, as she had been the only love in his life. |
