Even if August Halm today is best known for his essays and books he viewed himself primarily as a composer. His composition include three works for full orchestra, four works for string orchestra, numerous chanmer work and vocal music. His commitment to the styles of Bach, Beethoven and Bruckner seemed outdated. The musicologist Alfred Einstein refered to Halm in 1929 by asking, 'Can one write such music anymore?' - 'Yes, good music may be an absolute greatness, whenever and it was or will be written.
