Ryno - The First Swedish Romantic Opera
Frans Fredric Eduard Brendler was born in Dresden in 1800 and moved to Sweden the following year when his father Johann Frans was appointed flautist with the Court Orchestra. The young Eduard received flute lessons from his father, but did not at first devote himself professionally to music: he was employed as a book-keeper by Jacob Dubbe on the island of Gotland and, upon his return to Stockholm in 1823, referred to himself as a businessman.

That same year he joined the Orchestra of Harmoniska sällskapet (the Harmonic Society) and also appeared as a flute soloist. The following year be was named as an honorary member of the Society.

Order
We cannot be sure who commissioned Ryno, but there is every reason to suppose that Crown Prince Oscar was involved in some way. Both Oscar and Beskow knew Brendler well, not least from the Harmonic Society. In addition, the perforrnance of Spastaras död, 1830 had given conclusive proof of Brendler's musical ability.
A performance of Ryno was planned for the autumn of 1831, after extensive building work at the theatre. From the correspondence between J.F. Rydqvist and Beskow it is apparent that the libretto '...made its way to Brendler' on 10th July 1830. The composer thus received the text well in advance of the projected premiére. Despite being delightful, loyal and charming, however, Brendler lacked application and only composed the music he had been commissioned to write when the perforrnance was imminent. In concsquence, only eight of the fourteen musical numbers were ready when the composer died in 1831. One year after Brentler died, the opera was completed - by the Crown Prince himself. The premiere were scheduled in May 1834.
