Arthaus DVD | This DVD combines live recordings of great concerts by two unusual artistic partnerships: the piano and bass duo of Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, and that of piano and vibraphone players Chick Corea and Gary Burton. You can tell the chemistry between Carla Bley and Steve Swallow is hot stuff from the variety of music the two play here. The program consists entirely of titles composed by Carla Bley herself. The live performance by Chick Corea and Gary Burton was recorded during a sell-out concert on 17 February 1981 at the Yubin-Chokin Hall in Tokyo. It included some of Corea's finest compositions: "Mirror, mirror", "Bud Powell", seven pieces from "Children's songs", "Senor Mouse", "Song to Gayle", and "La fiesta". For a long time the duo could only be heard live, and it wasn't until the release of the album Native Sense in 1997 - long after the live concert reproduced here on DVD - that we finally had a recording which once more documented the extraordinary harmonies and compositions of this unique collaboration. |
