At the age of 18, in the Norwegian capital of Kristiania, Agathe Backer Grøndahl (1847 - 1907) made her début as a pianist in Beethoven’s fifth concerto with Edvard Grieg conducting. She had already started composing music as a child and continued to do so throughout her life but for some years was best known as a pianist. Ole Bull’s strong recommendation led to her studying the piano with both Hans von Bülow and Franz Liszt and she enjoyed a very successful career as a pianist, not least with Grieg’s piano concerto in England. Many of her own compositions for the piano were an instant success and a number of them have remained in the pianistic repertoire in Norway ever since. This release is not only an important documentation of a pioneering woman composer but also a splendid programme of engaging – and often virtuosic - piano music from the Romantic era.
